George Edmund Baines

Rev. John Baines (Minister at Stuckton, 1910 – 1950) and wife Mary had a son – George Edmund Baines, born on 24th September 1892.

From the Brunel University records, we understand he attended Borough Road College (which ultimately became part of Brunel) for two years, graduating with an Intermediate Science qualification. Whilst at the college Baines competed in rugby for Borough Road College. He is listed as being destined for a position at “C.S., Thrybergh” – likely ‘County School’ Thrybergh.

He sent the following postcards to Charles and Margret (Maggie) Lewis at Stuckton:

We know George enlisted into the 12th Battalion, 2nd South Down, Royal Sussex Regiment, becoming a Corporal and having service number SD/2143. Sadly, he died of wounds on 2nd July 1916, aged 23.

He is recorded as being buried at Boulogne East Cemetery, Pas de Calais, by the Commonwealth War Grave commission. He is also remembered on a memorial plaque formally at Borough Road College, now listed by the Imperial War Museum as being at Brunel University London in Kingston Lane, Uxbridge.

The following pictures are of Charles and Margret Lewis of Stuckton who George was sending the postcards to, and of Rev. Baines, his father and minister of Stuckton at the time of his death.
